Overview

The Cells for Sight Stem Cell Therapy Research Unit was established in 2005 and was the UK’s first Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) accredited cultured stem cell facility.

This Unit operates in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice, enabling cells and tissues to be used in the clinic.

Manufacturing Capability

  • 2 grade B laboratories (10m2 and 20m2)
  • 4 x Biological Safety Cabinets providing Grade A processing environment
  • 4 x CO2 incubators
  • Liquid nitrogen cell storage
  • Fully equipped store room with +4C, -20C and -80C storage
  • Sterilisation facilities provided by Moorfields Eye Hospital CSSD

  • Human limbal epithelial stem cells
  • Human oral mucosal epithelial cells
  • Retinal pigmented epithelial cells derived from human embryonic stem cells
  • Human conjunctival epithelial progenitor cells
